Marti felt sad when she hung up. She wasn’t sure why, if it was because she wanted to know where Iris was, what had happened to her, or if it had more to do with Johnny. The changes after Iris left were subtle. Johnny had always been slow to speak, and soft-spoken when he did. He just said less. He still loved to dance, just didn’t want to go dancing as often. He still smiled, laughed with her, but both all but disappeared when they were with anyone else.

She put in a call to a woman she had met who belonged to the genealogical group at Woodson Library in Chicago.

“Marriage records,” the woman suggested. “The application, not the license. And you’ll have to know what county.”

Where would she begin, Marti wondered, after she hung up. Iris had walked out the door one day and never called, wrote, or came back. If she had gotten married, she could have been living anywhere. She could begin with Cook County, but if there was no record of Iris there, she had no idea of where to search next.

The phone interrupted her thoughts. Lieutenant Nicholson wanted to see her and Vik. Now what? Change. She hated it.
